Glossary
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein, which belongs to the albumin family and is mainly synthesized by fetal liver cells and yolk sac. Alpha-fetoprotein has a high concentration in fetal blood circulation, and it decreases after birth. It is basically replaced by albumin in 2 to 3 months after birth, and it is difficult to detect in blood, so the content in adult serum is extremely low. . Alpha-fetoprotein has many important physiological functions, including transport function, bidirectional regulatory function as a growth regulator, immunosuppression, induction of apoptosis of T lymphocytes and so on. Alpha-fetoprotein is closely related to the occurrence and development of liver cancer and various tumors. Clinical Significance
1. Detection of serum AFP levels in childhood: liver cancer, hepatoblastoma, gonadal teratoblastoma, hepatitis and other AFP levels increased.
2. Detection of serum AFP content in adults: 60% to 70% of patients with primary liver cancer have increased AFP levels, and testicular cancer, ovarian tumors, malignant teratoma, pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer, bowel cancer, lung cancer and other patients also have increased AFP levels.
3. Serum AFP levels in patients with benign liver diseases such as acute and chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis are increased to varying degrees, but most of them are lower than 1000ug/L, and the increase is related to the degree of necrosis and regeneration of liver cells.
4. Generally, the increase of AFP content in benign liver disease is transient and usually lasts for 2-3 weeks. Malignant tumors continued to increase.
